Everyone has a favorite sleeping position. One is a belly sleeper while the other wants nothing else but to sleep on his or her side. A good sleeping position is important for your health. But which posture is good? And which one isn’t? In this article you can read whether your favorite sleeping position is the healthiest one and what kind of mattress fits in with it.
1. I’m a Stomach Sleeper
Stomach sleeping is seen as the worst sleeping position. This is caused by turning your head to the left or right, which makes the spinal column in the neck suffer heavily. You are also more likely to have a painful lower back because your back forms a large hollow space. 5% of the stomach sleepers actually sleep on their stomachs all night long. The majority sleeps on their stomach but, as soon as they actually sleep, still lies on their side.
Which mattress? Choose a harder mattress than what is recommended based on your weight. Go for a cold foam filling or a hard pocket spring mattress and we recommend not using a pillow, so that your cervical spine is less stressed.
2. I’m a Side Sleeper
Do you prefer to sleep on your side? Then you’re in the majority! This sleeping position is good for lower back pain, stress and sleep apnea. Do you often suffer from heartburn? Chances are that you choose to sleep on your side. However, it can cause the muscles in your neck and shoulders to compress because one of your shoulders carries a lot of weight. Unfortunately, wrinkles in the face and décolleté can occur when you sleep on your side.
Which mattress? A pocket spring mattress with softer zones for shoulders and hips is ideal. Your pillow is high and firm and fills the cavity in your neck.
3. I’m a Back Sleeper
This is the best sleeping position for your health. When you sleep on your back your body gets good support and the weight is well spread over the whole mattress. Another advantage, and certainly not the least important one, is that you are less likely to get wrinkles. While sleeping on your back, there is no pressure on the skin, which allows it to breathe freely all night long. A disadvantage of sleeping on your back is that you are more likely to snore. The tongue sinks somewhat to the back, which partially closes off the windpipe.
Which mattress? Choose a latex or memory foam mattress that supports your back cavity well. Your pillow may be a little flatter and harder. Sleeping without a pillow is also allowed.
